Any of you ever wondered what the origin of the phrase "herd effect"?
“Herd effect” is called that way as an allegory for a barn full of cows and what happens when one of them starts to make noises. Once this happens, every cow who heard the noises begin to make its own noise and so more and more cows start to make noises.
There is something a bit disturbing about the idea that people are compared to cows (still, most of the world's human population eat them), but eventually there’s really not too much difference.
Who hasn’t returned to the restaurant where he did not like the food, after countless recommendations from his friends, and suddenly the food was delicious to him? Or decided to suddenly see a TV series just because "Everybody sees it" or go to the gym because "everyone goes". There is something very natural about the desire to be part of the herd. Almost no living beings choose to live their lives alone, and that a fact.
Years ago, when I was active in the “Tapuz” forums, I came to a Forum meeting of "Alternative Fashion" which took place in the roof (3rd floor) of the Azrieli Mall. To this day I remember a terrible disappointment which I felt when I saw the attenders. Everyone wanted to dress some unique alternative way, and eventually they - all more or less - wore the same thing: a corset or just a black shirt, a kilt, striped socks and shoes All-Stars.
I had immediate had a plash back to elementary school days, when half the class wore a huge fleece sweatshirts of “FOX” (remember?), Which was considered the coolest (I’m sure that the company miss those days. I’m, however, am not).
That's why I just don’t like trends. After trend start to spread there’s no way you can escape - from designer stores, through the major fashion stores to marketplaces. Everyone is trying to adapt themselves to what "everyone" put on for livelihood.
On the other hand, try to think how it feels to have someone dressed exactly like you (maybe some of you even know the issue firsthand.) Investing your time to stand up in front of your closet and choose what you wear, putting makeup on, matching accessories and doing anything that will make you to feel beautiful and special. The evening begins suddenly you spot a girl wearing a dress just like yours (Somehow she always looks better than you!). Sucks, oh?
Here are three small tips about how all this can be avoided that (or at least try):
1. Do not buy things just because they are trendy. When you buy something, do it because you love it, not because it's fashionable.
2. If you've already decided you're buying an item that is part of a trend, buy something that is not the main thing of your clothing (like overalls). It will be easier for you to create the appearance that it is compatible to you and not to another three hundred other girls on the street.
3. Usually, the small things are what is making the difference. Instead of wearing a flowered dress, what don’t you wear a simple dress in one color and attach to it a floral-print belt? That will make you to be fashionable but still more interesting than most girls.
